Oh, it's not time to play in the sink? Really? Maybe you should tell that to my PINK STEP STOOL. Burn!

Thanks to a snow storm, we all had a sleepover at Grandma and Grandpa Simpson's last night, which was good practice for next weekend when Andy and I are in a wedding and he'll have his first night without us. Or, perhaps more significantly, we'll have our first night without him.

Coming soon: a photo journal of the many messy projects we've attempted daily to keep the boy busy and learning.

toddler

I haven't posted in a while. It's mostly because I'm busy and sick. It certainly is NOT because the baby hasn't changed.

Excuse me, toddler.

He's gone with lightning speed from first steps to walking. Sometimes, crawling is faster, but you can see on his face that he loves walking and he knows what he's doing. I think his record now is something like 45 consecutive steps. His confidence is awe-inspiring.

He remains uninterested in sippy cups, but he's willing to drink water and juice now.

He's more vocal. I'm still not 100% convinced that he associates "mama" with me and "dada" with his father, but he says them plenty, as well as baba, nana, and various other growls, whines, and babbles. Blowing raspberries is still a favorite.

Yogurt had been the only item on his will-not-eat list, until the recent mess he made with his toddler dinner of chicken, noodles, and peas. None of it would stay in his mouth. Nor would he pull the food out and put it on the tray. No, he let it all fall out of his mouth into his lap and onto the floor.

He plays differently with toys. All those little buttons and pulls and levers that meant nothing to him before are becoming interesting as he discovers cause and effect.

His laughter cures all.

As with all things related to him, it's bittersweet watching his rapid progress into toddler-hood. You'll have to forgive me for still calling him my baby for the next, oh, fifty years.

steps

He's been taking two unassisted steps (and then falling) consistently this week.

He waited until I had the camera turned on to take six (and a half) steps. Best baby ever? Yeah, I thought so.

Since the taking of this video an hour ago, he's done it a few more times. It won't be long until we call him a "toddler."

Toddler?

How did this happen?

learning

Last night, Fletcher amazed himself. It was one of the best moments I've ever had.

It wasn't all that amazing by itself. Fletcher was about to get into his pajamas, so I had him sitting up in the Pack 'n Play while I covered his eczema spots with lotion. He was very intent on biting down on the playpen, so he grabbed onto the side with both hands.

Then he pulled himself up on his knees, and his face absolutely beamed. He breathed in sharply, a smile blooming across his round face, his eyes lighting up with pleasure. He laughed, and he did it over and over again.

I tried to catch it on video, but as usual I was a bit late. At the very end of this little clip, he finally knelt again for a second and then flopped backward:

He's constantly learning. I was told recently that the reason he's having such a hard time going to sleep when he's so obviously tired is because there's so much to see, do, and learn, and he doesn't want to close his eyes.

He can army crawl the length of a room now. He knows how to get his legs out of the way when he's rolling around furniture. He has a special affinity for remotes and cords, and is strong enough to yank a whole laptop off a table just by grabbing a cord. No matter what he grabs, it takes 0.5 seconds to reach his mouth.

He absolutely hates when we try to wipe clean or put lotion on his face. He wiggles widely during diaper changes. He loves drawstrings, especially on sweatshirts, more than anything else in the world. Necklaces and glasses are up there, though. Looking in the mirror will often bring smiles, as will surprising him (peek-a-boo!) and tickling his sides.

He's more aware than he's ever been. He sees everything that his eyes had once coasted over. Watching him soak up every detail reminds me to stop, slow down, and look. There's a lot of world to see.

Moon River, wider than a mile,
I'm crossing you in style some day.
Oh, dream maker, you heart breaker,
wherever you're going I'm going your way.
Two drifters off to see the world.
There's such a lot of world to see.
We're after the same rainbow's end -
waiting 'round the bend,
my huckleberry friend, Moon River and me.

sleep

When going through our most recent photos, I couldn't help noticing a theme.

We're all really tired, apparently.

I busted out some of the six month toys he received in the baby showers or shortly after he was born. He's completely surrounded in colorful plastic. He's adding more playfulness to his all-I-want-is-for-it-to-fit-in-my-mouth phase, so things are going to keep getting more fun.

He's reached every milestone there seems to be for a five-month-old. I read that six-month-old milestones include sleeping less -- taking a few naps in a day, totaling three or four hours of sleep.

Our morning routine has been off this week and I can't help panicking that it isn't going to work anymore. If he isn't going to sleep in the morning when I leave for work, then he's going to have to scream to get the attention he wants, as he did today. And Andy is not going to sleep.

It isn't Fletcher's fault or anyone else's that we need to work. I have to remind myself of that in the morning when I turn away from his smiling, eager face and leave him.

19w 4d eating

What must it be like to have only ever eaten one thing? How jarring must it be to discover a second, all new taste and texture?

This was our first rice cereal attempt last weekend. Tonight, thanks to a tip from Andy's coworkers (and learning as I go), Fletcher's feeding was a success!

Tip No. 1: When mixing breast milk and rice cereal, add in some baby applesauce. It appears to have improved the taste.

Tip No. 2: Load the spoon, then hold the napkin under baby's chin, then wait a few seconds for him to hold his head still. THEN tip the spoon into his mouth.

We're learning.
